Designing With Web - Part 3: week 1
Provide universal and affordable access to the Internet.
Group "11"
Project 1: Superouter
Context
Only 50% of the world population were Internet users. This statement is
worrying. Our NGO, Planetlink, aims to develop a hotspot called
Superouter, that would connect devices to the Internet via a wireless
service provider. It would emit a Wi-Fi signal that users can connect
their personal devices to (laptop, tablet, or smart phone) in order to
use the Internet. Trough our Superouter app, people can support our work
by donating, potential suppliers can get in contact with us and
volunteers can either enrol or follow our advancements on a regular
basis.
Target
With our product we aim to target remote villages and cities that do not
have access to Internet connexion. According to the Digital Information
World website, the top ten most disconnected regions, include South
Sudan, Eritrea, Burundi, Somalia, Niger, Papua New Guinea, Liberia,
Guinea-Bissau, and the Central African Republic. Ideally, we would like
to provide those regions with Internet.
Service offered
We aim to create an app to support the creation of a hotspot that would
connect devices to the Internet via a cellular (wireless) service
provider. It would emit a Wi-Fi signal that users can connect their
personal devices to (laptop, tablet, or smart phone) in order to use the
Internet. Our app would enable people who want to contrubute to our cause
to donate a certain amount of money through our payment platform.
With our product we aim to target remote villages and cities that do not
have access to Internet connexion. Ideally, we would like to collaborate
with existing Internet providers and companies that own satelites. Thus,
the amount of investments needed are sizable.

Benchmark
-
There are several apps for charitable purposes that would directly
compete with us such as Coin Up or Charity Miles. Users might just
want to dowmload these apps instead.
-
We also have numbers of indirect competitors that offer 3G and 4G
hotspot devices on the market, including devices like the Clear Spot
Voyager Wireless Hotspot and the T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 4G Mobile Hotspot.
-
Starlink is a project that has a similar aim. This project launched by
SpaceX is developing a low latency, broadband internet system to meet
the needs of consumers across the globe.
